The intragastric balloon is an espherical silicone device that is implanted inside the stomach cavity via an endoscopic procedure, the objective is to reduce the feeling of hunger and to produce an early feeling of fulness after eating.
Initially, the balloon is deflated and introduced via the oral cavity (mouth). Once placed in the stomach, it is filled with solution. This is an outpatient/non-invasive procedure with minimal disconfort to the patient.
Intragastric Balloon Function.
The basic function of the intragastric balloon is to take up space in the stomach cavity. The balloon is carefully placed near the stomach’s mechanoreceptors that produce the feeling of fulness. Because the introduction of the balloon is done via the mouths, it does not require any type of surgery.
The placement of the ballon has to be performed by a certified Gastroenterologist who has been properly trained in the procedure.
We place the balloon via an endoscopic procedure. The estimated duration of the procedure is 20 to 30 minutes. As we mentioned before, the insertion is done via the mouth, the patient will be under local anesthesia for the throat and an intravenous sedative. After the proper placement of the ballon; the ballon will ba filled with solution. The patient will remain in the clinic for a few hours until the physitian acknowledges that they can leave.
Duration of implant
The duration of the implant is 6 months. The removal of the device is done via endoscopic procedure and no discomfort.
After 6 months, we proceed with the extraction. The procedure lasts about 20 minutes and is performed with the same anesthesia as the insertion. Previous to the extraction, the solution would be removed and the balloon would be deflated. After a few hours the patient can return home.
What happens at the end of the treatment?
The combination of a intragastric balloon and a diet plan helps patients in modifying their eating habits, such that they can lose weight and keep it off once the treatment has ended.
The median weight loss observed in patients was 15 to 25Kg.
Results seen with the balloon have been successful and observed in various published studies. On average patients lose 50% of their excess weight and lower their IMC between 4 and 5 points.
